Dr. Michelle Retz, naturopathic physician, from Longevity Medical, located in Phoenix Arizona, gave an interesting and very in depth presentation on autoimmune disease prevention for the long-term. She defined autoimmune disease as the body attacking itself, and discussed that 70% of the immune system is in the gastrointestinal tract, stressing the importance of gut health for anyone progressively improving their health and longevity.
Dr. Retz outlined many causes of inflammation and autoimmune disease in the body, such as food allergies and sensitivities, compromised ability to digest food, gut motility, infections, bacterial overgrowth, imbalance in gut flora, heavy metals and environmental toxins, mental/emotional imbalances and more. She stressed the importance of People Unlimited members and life extension advocates being proactive in testing for, and eliminating inflammatory factors as much as possible, for optimum health of the immune system. Reducing the toxic load is vital and Dr. Retz suggested many ways to do that in our home and work environments.
Regarding the naturopathic approach to treatment, Dr. Retz stressed that finding and eliminating causes of disease is vital. Supplements that help the immune system were also discussed, such as vitamin D and DHEA to prevent chronic inflammation in the body, restoration of good gut flora, the consumption of organic foods; as well as what foods to avoid, especially sugar. It is clear that healthy life extension requires a holistic approach, as well as an overall appreciation of the body’s incredible self-healing power given optimum conditions.
